Valencia: photos of serranos towers and Quart towers

Serranos Towers and Quart Towers

They are the only two doors that were conserved, from the total of twelve doors that were in the old wall to protect Valencia for 500 years.

Serranos Towers:
They were constructed in 1392 and they were the main entrance to Valencia. During 300 years they were a noble jail, and at the present time, they are used like "arc of triumph" in festive celebrations, like "crida", the call that marks the official beginning of the fallas.

Quart Towers:
Constructed in Century XV, following the model of Castell Nuovo towers (Naples). They were, during long time, a jail of women. They were called "Doors of the Lime" because all the lime that entered Valencia should enter across this door.

Train of the Farm (Burjassot)

The railroad of the Farm, located in the park of the same name in Burjassot, carries out a tour of 1200 meters that reproduces the majority of the elements that are present in a real railway tour: bridges, tunnels, stations, changes of route, semaphores, etc.
It has two steam engines, a diesel machine, one petrol machine, and an electrical autorail. The material and the tour belongs to Burjassot's town hall, and the exploitation runs at the expense of an association of former railroad workers and fans of the train.

FALLAS OF VALENCIA, SPAIN

The monuments

The fallas of Valencia take place from March 15 to March 19, in honor to San Jose, patron saint of the carpenters. During these days, more than 700 monuments of carton are placed in every corner of the city, turning Valencia into an immense outdoor museum. These monuments have a satirical character, and ridicule those events happened during the year that the critique and the censorship deserve.

Nevertheless, these works of art have an ephemeral life. On the 19th in the night, all they burn of almost simultaneously, between the emotion of the falleros and the surprise and incomprehension of the visitor, who does not remain impassive before the spectacle.

Valencia. Photos mascletá fallas

La mascletá

The "mascletá", or more correctly, "mascletada", is a pyrotechnic thunderous spectacle, a " symphony of the noise", where the light and the color have a secondary role, and what is valued is the sonorous power, the pace, the progression and the final climax of a strake of more than 100 kilos of gunpowder. The noise overcomes, in some moments, 120 decibels.

This spectacle takes place in the Plaza of the Town hall, every day from the 1 on March 19, at 14:00.

With these carnations, it is made a gigantic tapestry that forms the mantle of the Virgin, with a design that changes every year.
