The Towers of Serranos are one of the former 12 front doors of Valencia, when it was a walled city.
They were constructed in 1392, to defend the main entrance to Valencia.
In 1865 the walls were demolished, but the Towers of Serranos and the Towers of Quart were respected.
The Towers of Serranos were a noble jail for 300 years. They have a pentagonal ground plan, and are surrounded by a pit.
They constitute an example of the civil gothic architecture.
At the present time, the Valencia Towers of Serranos are used like "arc of triumph" in festive events, as it is the case of the "Crida '", Fallas inagural act.
In year 1887 the back part of the Towers of Serranos is left open.
Since then, five rib rooms with arcs in nose and vaults can be observed.
The Towers of Quart were built by Pere Bofill in century XV, following the model of the towers of Castell Nuovo of Naples.
They belong to the delayed gothic style and they were constructed with military aims, to defend the entrance of the city.
During long time were called Towers of the Lime, because it was demanded that all the lime that entered Valencia happened through them.
The later facade of the towers was uncovered, allowing to contemplate its inside.
The towers of Quart were a jail of women during long time.
In their outside are still visible the tracks of the battles, of which they were witnesses.
